About this Webinar

Domestic abuse is one of the most common adversities affecting children in UK schools, yet its impact is often misunderstood or overlooked in day-to-day safeguarding practice. In this free webinar with Dr Asha Patel, Clinical Psychologist and CEO of Innovating Minds, we explore the hidden impact of domestic abuse on children and young people, and how schools can support regulation and healing.

Drawing on her clinical experience across CAMHS, forensic mental health and education settings, Dr Patel unpacks how domestic abuse affects a child's development. Participants will leave understanding why these children are victims in their own right, not simply witnesses, and how to respond with safety, connection and healing.

  • How domestic abuse affects children's emotional, psychological and physiological development, and why the impact doesn't end when the abuse does.
  • Why trauma often presents through behaviour, and how to recognise it through a trauma-informed lens.
  • Practical, whole-school strategies for creating cues of safety and supporting staff experiencing vicarious trauma.

About the Presenter

Dr. Asha Patel
Clinical Psychologist & CEO, Innovating Minds

Dr Asha Patel is a registered Clinical Psychologist with experience across CAMHs, inpatient and forensic mental health services. Her early clinical work in medium secure forensic settings revealed a consistent pattern: adults with complex mental health needs whose difficulties could be traced back to unidentified and unsupported childhood trauma.

Dr Patel’s mission is to ensure that trusted adults across systems, social care practitioners, educators, early help teams and community staff, are equipped with the skills, confidence and clinical understanding to respond to trauma at the earliest point of need.

Today, Dr Patel leads a dedicated team to deliver trauma informed models for local authorities, enabling practitioners to support children and families using existing resources, trusted relationships and clinically backed programmes.
