About this Webinar

In awareness of World Suicide Prevention Day, CPOMS provided a webinar focused on supporting children and young people through challenging times. If you're someone who interacts with young individuals, you've likely encountered moments when they're feeling down or struggling.

In this session, Jon Trew, a seasoned expert in the field, discussed essential topics:

  • Starting Conversations: Discover effective ways to initiate discussions about students’ emotions and wellbeing.
  • Addressing Suicide: Gain valuable insights into handling situations when young people open up about suicidal thoughts..
  • Avoiding Reinforcement: Learn how to address sensitive topics without inadvertently reinforcing negative ideas.

We understand that it can be overwhelming to tackle these issues, often leaving you feeling unprepared. However, Jon provided actionable strategies to offer both emotional and practical support. He also provided guidance on assisting young individuals in developing safety plans if they're discussing suicide.

In addition, you can learn how effective safeguarding software can play a pivotal role in helping to monitor concerns around suicide and self-harm in schools and other settings.

If you or someone you know is struggling with self-harm or suicidal thoughts, there is help available. Samaritans is a confidential support service available 24/7 for those who need someone to talk to. You can contact them by calling 116 123 or by emailing jo@samaritans.org. Samaritans are there to listen, support, and provide guidance in a non-judgmental and confidential manner.
